GOOD GOVERNANCE: LAGOS DEEPENS COMPETENCIES OF PUBLIC OFFICE HOLDERS

 Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has said that his administration will continue to deliver value to the citizenry by developing and deepening the competencies of public officers to take on additional and higher responsibilities and deliver dividends of democracy to the residents of the State.

According to Ambode, his administration recognizes the enormous value that knowledge and skills training bring to bear on the attainment of the strategic objectives of the government and the public service of Lagos State.

The Governor spoke at the opening session of a training programme organised for political office holders in the 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas of the State as well as some top government officials in the mainstream of the civil service at Golden Tulip, Festac,Lagos.

Ambode who was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions, Dr. Akintola Benson Oke maintained that despite the commendable achievements of the present administration, the workforce should not rest on their oars, adding that improvements are not only important but very critical and fundamental for public sector growth and advancement.

Speaking further on the rationale for the training, he said, “It is always beneficial for organisations to take yet another look at the problems they are meant to solve in order to discover new and more effective methods of solving these problems”.

 

He expressed the hope that at the end of the training programme, participants will be better positioned to serve the common good, saying “I am confident that the training will extensively benefit the participant because they will have the opportunity to understand the elements of good governance and financial controls in Public service”.

 

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Mr. Babatunde Rotinwa, urged the Local Government Chairmen to explore creative means for revenue generation so that more developmental strides would be delivered to the masses who voted them to power.

 

He said that part of the training will focus on practical application of various instruments and techniques of good governance, financial and funds management, sustainable revenue mobilization models applicable to the business of government.

 

Delivering a goodwill message at the event, the Chairman, House Committee on Establishment, Training, Pensions and Public Service, Mr. Adedayo Famakinwa said the training will strengthen the local government administration in the State for effective service delivery to the populace.

 

The Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Mr. Muslim Folami called on the local government administrators to follow the steps of the Governor in internalizing good governance and consolidating on the achievements already recorded in the State.
