ILLEGAL DUMPING: LASG SEALS FISHERIES COMPANY

The Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of Vesa Fisheries, a company situated on Kudirat Abiola Way, Ojota for illegally dumping inflammable materials at the Olusosun dump site after it had been closed down by the Lagos State Government.

The Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti, gave the seal-up directive after a meeting with the Assistant Operations Manager of Vesa Fisheries, Azees Kelani and another representative of the Company, Osaro Eguamwense at the Ministry, saying that the immediate closure of the company was necessary to forestall further incidents at the dump site.

The Enforcement and Advocacy Department of the Ministry had, during its regular surveillance of the Olusosun dump site, discovered the indiscriminate dumping of materials capable of aggravating the situation at Olusosun by Vesa Fisheries in total disregard for the Lagos State Environmental Laws and closure order on the dumpsite.

Durosinmi-Etti stated that it was obvious that Vesa Fisheries under-declared the quantity and composition of its wastes and took advantage of its proximity to the dumpsite to violate the laws of the State and demonstrate a disregard for constituted authority.

His words: “It is obvious that the quantity and components of wastes the company generates have been under-declared because it deemed it convenient to covertly dump refuse at the site”.

The Environment Commissioner said that the law would be allowed to take its course on the matter.
