LAGOS REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to raising the standard of tertiary education in State-owned institutions to ensure that graduates have equal employment opportunities with their peers across the globe.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who made the declaration today at the 22nd Convocation for Higher Degrees of the Lagos State University (LASU) held at the main auditorium in Ojo, stated that there was an urgent need to initiate policies and strategies that would bridge the wide skill gap which, he said, has continuously rendered graduates of tertiary institutions unemployable.

The Governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Idiat Adebule, reiterated his administration’s commitment to ideas and innovations that align learning processes and outcomes in State tertiary institutions with the global demands from 21st-century graduates.

He observed the need to develop the skills and creative talents of young graduates along with their intellectual knowledge which, according to him, will give them the double advantage of either becoming employees or entrepreneurs after obtaining their degrees.

The Governor urged the graduates to prove themselves by putting the knowledge acquired to good use for the promotion of economic development, peace and progress of the State and the country at large.

”LASU is an institution of pride to us in the State as it has continued to produce employable and qualified manpower for both the public and private sector.

”To you the graduands of today, the University had prepared and certified you fit to enjoy the life ahead; it is now left for you to prove yourselves and put the knowledge acquired to good use for the promotion of economic development, peace and progress of the State,” he said.

The Governor urged the school management to continue to key into the vision of his administration by producing high capacity manpower needed to facilitate and improve productivity in a competitive global economy.

Also speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, said the graduands had been adequately tutored and nurtured to make their impact in the society.

According to him, the convocation ceremony is a product of perseverance, persistence and hard work to graduate deserving students and release them to the world to contribute to the growth of the society.

”I urge you to continue to develop your individual competencies and capacities to the full, improve on your skills and continually build on your achievements”.

”As an institution, we will not rest on our oars as we will continue to produce highly skilled and qualified manpower for the development of Nigeria, Africa and the global community,” said the Vice-Chancellor.
