NO LIFE WAS LOST IN BADAGRY TANKER INCIDENT – LASEMA

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has stated that the tanker accident which occurred yesterday night at Barracks Bus Stop, inward Iyana Oba along Lagos-Badagry Expressway, recorded no loss of life due to prompt response by its rescue team.

The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, noted that after the distress call was received at 9.45 pm via the emergency toll-free number 112/767, the Agency’s Response Team was immediately activated and got to scene of the accident before it escalated.

According to him “Upon arrival of team at the scene of the incident, it was observed that a Tanker with an unknown registration number, fully loaded with 33,000 litres of PMS and a white mini-truck carrying electrical appliances had a side collision resulting in a puncture on the tanker’s rear compartment which led to spillage  of its contents around the area”. 

The General Manager said that emergency responders, which included the combined team of LASEMA, the Lagos Fire Service, the Nigerian Police and others, successfully curtailed and stopped further spillage of the PMS into the surroundings.

He further stated that “The articulated tanker and trucks were thereafter recovered from the incident scene, however, during the recovery process, the contents of the tanker which hitherto spilt into the environment ignited, went aflame and consequently travelled back to the proximity of the scene resulting in an inferno”. 

Tiamiyu noted that three buses, one car, and six trucks were burnt in the process, adding that the circumstances resulting to this incident could be attributed to unsafe practices by inhabitants in the neighbourhood but no person was either injured or died in the incident. 

He applauded the Lagos State Fire Service, the LASEMA Response Team, 81 Division Nigeria Army Fire Service, Nigerian Police and LASTMA for their combined efforts to effectively put out the fire. 

While noting that investigation would be carried out by the appropriate authorities to determine the immediate and remote cause of the incident, Tiamiyu advised motorists to always adhere to the instructions of emergency workers at accident scenes to avoid unnecessary casualty.
