LAGOS SAFETY COLLABORATES WITH CIVIL ENGINEERS FOR “STABILITY WALK”

The Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Hakeem Dickson has said that the Agency will continue to exercise its mandate of making safety a lifestyle through sustained advocacy and sensitisation.

Dickson said this today during a fitness walk tagged “Walk For Structural Stability” organised in collaboration with the Nigeria Institute of Civic Engineers (Lagos State Chapter), adding that the Lagos State Government will continue to partner and collaborate with organisations, both public and private.

The Director-General explained that the present administration is conscious of its responsibility of ensuring the overall safety of Lagosians, hence the systematic and sustained safety training, advocacy and sensitisation of all stakeholders to ensure that they are well informed about safety.

He said the Commission supports the purpose of the walk which is to create awareness on the importance of structural stability in building construction, noting that it is also intended to promote healthy living, networking and synergy among participants.

On her part, the Chairman of the Nigeria Institution of Civil Engineers (Lagos Chapter) Mrs. Lola Adetona, said the objective of the Walk was to create awareness among the general public on incidents of collapsed buildings and structural defects with the aim of sensitising the people and professionals on the need to pay particular attention to structural stability.

She emphasised the importance of employing qualified professionals and observing safety measures at every stage of construction. 

The advocacy walk, which started from the Lagos State Fire Service premises through Obafemi Awolowo Way Ikeja and back, had in attendance the Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission and his team, members of the Nigeria Institute of Civil Engineers, Building Engineers, and other engineers from the Lagos State Civil Service.
