LASG URGES RELIGIOUS LEADERS TO ENLIGHTEN MEMBERS ON ROAD SAFETY

The Lagos State Computerised Vehicle Inspection Service (LACVIS) has urged religious leaders in the State to encourage their adherents to obey traffic rules and regulations as a prerequisite for adequate safety on the roads.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Dr. Taiwo Olufemi Salaam, while speaking today at an Inter-Faith Safety Seminar held at the VIS open arcade, Ojodu Berger, said the State government organised the seminar as part of efforts to involve religious leaders in the zero-tolerance campaign against traffic lawlessness.

He further stated that government has observed with dismay that caution has been thrown to the wind by motorists as it recorded a surge in the number of lives lost through road accidents last year, adding that enforcement will be enhanced to effectively curb misdemeanour of any form on the part of road users.

Speaking in the same vein, the Managing Director of the Lagos State Computerised Vehicle Inspection Service (LACVIS), Mr. Segun Obayendo said that no fewer than 1,538 Nigerians died in the fourth quarter of Y2018 according to National Bureau of Statistics.

Obayendo noted that the growing trend of road abuse should be confronted, stressing that the causalities recorded in various motor accidents in the State involved adherents of all faiths, therefore there is need to ensure that religious leaders are part of the sensitisation campaigns.

He explained further that LACVIS has continued to focus on optimum performance condition of vehicles in compliance with the present administration’s agenda on transportation in Lagos.

The Director Vehicle Inspection Service, Engr. Gbolahan Toriola also appealed to religious leaders to reach out to their members and sensitise them on safety measures put in place by the State government through LACVIS, saying that the cooperation of religious heads is essential in ensuring that motorists abide by the safety parameters.
