LAGOS CREATES MORE RECREATION PARKS
The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has disclosed that construction work is at advanced stage at the recreation parks in Shasha, Alimosho LGA and Ebute Iga in Ikorodu LCDA in addition to all the parks available for public use in the State.
Ambode, who made the disclosure at the year 2017 Tree Planting Campaign held at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, promised that these new parks will be completed and opened for public use before the end of the year.
He reiterated the administration’s commitment to plant more trees along all newly constructed roads across the State, create more Gardens and ensure that all open spaces in Lagos are upgraded and beautified with trees, shrubs and flowers.
The Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, noted that the State has become a positive reference point in Nigeria on the creation of Green environment and emphasized that the State government will not rest on her oars to sustain the greening project.
He said, “We remain committed to this cause and will vigorously pursue the State greening policy of total regeneration of degraded sites as part of our pact with Lagosians”.
He further noted that the aim of this year’s event is to ensure that Lagos is able to meet the 10 million trees target by 2020, hence the replication of the campaign at over 87 sites across the State.
Earlier, the State Commissioner for The Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare observed that planting of trees, aside from beautifying and enhancing the aesthetics of the environment, has helped to convert criminal hideouts and open spaces into orchids and woodlands.
He said this year’s event witnessed the decoration of Green Ambassadors, Lagosians who have contributed in no small measure to the State greening initiatives.
The tree planting campaign programme is an annual event organized by the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) to sensitize Lagosians on the importance of planting trees.
