AMBODE OKAYS CLEAN UP OF INNER STREETS OF IKOYI, OTHERS

… RESIDENTS GIVEN 14 DAYS GRACE TO REMOVE ILLEGAL STRUCTURES

 

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode has ordered another round of clean- up of the inner streets of Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki and has therefore given residents with illegal structures 14 days grace to remove such infractions or face unpleasant happenings.

 

According to a Press statement issued today by the Chairman and Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Tunji Bello, the directive was given after receiving a briefing from the special committee on the first stage of the exercise which involved the major streets.

 

Bello said that Governor Ambode had, in late December last year, directed that the enforcement be stepped down because of the festive period, adding that the committee would deploy its Task Force to all the inner streets of Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki after the expiration of the grace period.

 

The SSG explained that since the completion of the first stage of the clean-up exercise last year, the committee has continued its advocacy programme to residents on the need to sustain the gains and ensure that the original masterplan of the areas be retained.

 

He said that the committee is also engaging stakeholders like Victoria Island Ikoyi Residents Association (VIIRA) on how the Clean-Up exercise can record more gains in terms of voluntary compliance by residents.

 

Bello warned residents to comply with the directive as the government “will bring full effect of the law to bear on anyone who contravenes the Environmental Sanitation laws”.

 

He warned that management of the Federal Marriage Registry in Ikoyi whose patrons, he said, always engage in indiscriminate parking on the road thus disrupting free flow of traffic, to find immediate solution to the problem of parking, or face the full wrath of the law.

 

Bello restated the determination of the Ambode administration to restore the original master plan of Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki by checking the activities of street traders, owners of shanties and roadside automobile repairers who have converted many dual carriage lanes to single lanes and walkways through indiscriminate parking and other forms of illegalities in the areas.

 

“We are also using this medium to again sensitize members of the public and residents of the affected inner streets who are involved in these illegalities to take immediate action and do the needful as the State Government will take the necessary steps to enforce its environmental and sanitation laws forthwith”, he said.
