LAGOS EXTENDS SAFETY CAMPAIGNS TO LGAS/LCDAS … URGES RESIDENTS TO REPORT BREACH OF SAFETY STANDARD

  The Lagos State Safety Commission has harped on the need for Lagosians to live every day with safety consciousness and support the State government’s drive towards the elimination of all forms of hazards in all Local Government and Local Council Development Areas.

 

Addressing newsmen during the sensitization/inspection tour of some LGAs and LCDAs across the State, an engineer with the Directorate of Zonal Operations of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Todo Whede, stated that the Commission decided to re-invigorate its safety campaign at the grassroots in order to nip in the bud the rate of avoidable emergency occurrences.

He added that the first phase of the programme which will cut across Alimosho, Ikeja, Agege, Onigbongbo, Ojodu and Orile Agege Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas is geared towards hazard identification and risk assessment at the grassroots.

 

“This grassroots safety awareness programme themed “Remove the Hazard, Save a Life” has two Safety Marshals in each of the 57 LGAs/LCDAs of the State;  they have been commissioned and trained to identify all kinds of safety hazards within their areas be it low or high safety risk” Engr. Whede explained.

According to him, the Commission has equally granted the safety marshals the authority to remove any identified hazards that fall within their jurisdiction, adding that at the end of the exercise, there will be compilation of a risk assessment report which will be sent to each of the concerned Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas for further actions and compliance.

 

While restating the resolve of the Commission to intensify its safety awareness campaign, Engr. Whede disclosed that some of the hazards identified by the safety marshals during the tour include cable wires on the road, manholes and lack of barrier and adequate signage at the railway crossing in Agege LGA.
