LAGOS ISLAND LGA INAUGURATES INTER-RELIGIOUS BODY

In line with the Lagos State Government’s directive to all Local Government and Local Council Development Areas to establish inter-religious bodies similar to Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) at the grassroots level, the Chairman Lagos Island Local Government, Mr. Tijani Adetoyese Olusi has inaugurated a 14-member council to oversee the peaceful co-existence of adherents of the different religions in the community.

Speaking while inaugurating the body on Tuesday in his office, the Chairman said: “The Council is saddled with responsibilities of ensuring peaceful co-existence among all residents irrespective of their faith. Members should also involve themselves in counseling and settle misunderstanding among the citizens”.

While informing that they are also to intervene in communal clashes before it escalates, Olusi assured the Council members that the Local Government would give them the necessary support at making their mandate realisable.

Responding on behalf of other members, the Co-Chairman of the Council, Rev. J. A Onikeku appreciated the Chairman for giving them the opportunity to serve the community, promising that the Body would perform its duty with the fear of God.
