LASPARK SET TO COMMENCE COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING
As part of the preparations for the Y2018 Tree Planting sensitization exercise, the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, (LASPARK) is set to commence Community Tree Planting Campaign across the 20 Local Government and 37 Local Council Development Areas of the State with the theme ‘Plant a Tree’.
Speaking at the weekly management meeting, the General Manager of the Agency, Mrs. Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola said the community tree planting sensitization and awareness programme is to sustain the greening policy of the State Government, noting that it has become crucial to continuously reawaken the consciousness of the people to plant trees and combat the negative effects of climate change in their community.
“The sacred responsibility of preserving nature lies in our hands and nature has been good to us but our refusal to reciprocate this kind gesture is ungodly, inhuman and selfish”, she enthused.
Adebiyi-Abiola reiterated that when people continue to kill trees, they kill life, reduce biological diversity and cheat posterity. Therefore, the need to plant trees in our community is germane to healthy living. She emphasized that the Community Tree planting will cut across all LGAs and LCDAs with the active participation of NYSC members, NGOs, students, green compliance organizations, government institutions as well as CDAs/CDCs.
She stated that this year’s programme will be flagged off at Agbado Oke-Odo LCDA on Saturday, 21st April, 2018 from 8.00am, while Epe LGA will host the event on the 5th May, 2018. The programme will later move to Surulere LGA on 19th May, 2018.
Other hosting venues include Ikosi LCDA, 3rd June, 2018, Amuwo Odofin LCDA, 17th June, 2018, and Ikeja LGA on 1st July, 2018.
She restated the commitment of the Government to clamp down on perpetrators of illegal tree-felling and pruning, stressing that permission should be sought from LASPARK before any tree can be felled or pruned as dictated by the Law.
The General Manager maintained that the Agency has zero tolerance for tree-felling and will not spare the rod in bringing perpetrators to justice.
