MONITORING, ENFORCEMENT KEY TO SAFETY OF LIVES – LASG
The General Manager of Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) Tpl. Funmi Osifuye has disclosed that monitoring of physical structures and enforcement of the law are key to ensuring the safety of lives and property in the State.
Speaking during a joint enforcement exercise between LASPPPA and Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Tpl. Osifuye stated that the Authority embarked on the exercise in line with one of its major statutory functions of ensuring compliance with the Law on Approved and Operative Development Plans, Approval Orders and Regulations to ensure a sustainable, safe, secure, functional, business and tourism friendly Lagos environment.
He emphasised that the two sister agencies embarked on the enforcement to rid Lagos of contraventions and infractions.
While enjoining Lagosians to build right by getting a planning permit before construction and build to specification, he urged them to avail themselves of the six-month grace period offer to landowners and developers with existing developments, redevelopment, renovation or those wishing to commence construction but are yet to perfect their land title to obtain Planning Permits/ Approvals without penal fee.
Engr. Lekan Sodeinde, the General Manager of LASBCA, said enforcement of building laws is imperative as some developers and landowners are recalcitrant and need to be given a push or nudge to comply with the regulations.
He hinted that the exercise is a continuous one and would be extended to all nooks and crannies to give impetus to the zero tolerance for collapse building stance of the State Government, adding that the Agency is coming hard on recalcitrant builders who failed to apply for building plan approvals or built contrary to approval given.
The leader of the combined team of LASPPPA and LASBCA officials, Tpl. Kayode Daramola revealed that about 33 buildings along Lekki-Epe Expressway were served notices and sealed for contraventions such as illegal conversion and non-compliance with an approved permit during the exercise.
