LSSC INSPECTS ONIKAN STADIUM PROJECT

Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Dr. Kweku Adedayo Tandoh led other members of the Management Team, including the Director General, Mr. Babatunde Bank-Anthony, to physically inspect the level of work done by the Construction Company -Messer Slavabogu Nigeria Limited -at the ongoing reconstruction works of Onikan Stadium, on Lagos Island.

Speaking during the inspection tour, Dr. Tandoh applauded Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for the reconstruction, adding that he is impressed with the level of work done by the Contractor so far.

According to Dr. Tandoh, with this construction, the State Government is building a facility that can accommodate High-Grade FIFA competitions, make the State, the sports hub of Africa as well as satisfy the yearnings of Lagosians in terms of building facilities for youth development.

He added that the facility after completion in January 2019 would be ready to host the FIFA International event such as U-17 World Cup and Women World Cup among others.

“People know this facility as Onikan Stadium, but it will be reconstructed as a Multi-Purpose Entertainment Center in order to serve not only as football arena but to include entertainment and tourism, hence provision for entertainment and concerts area has been provided”, he said.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of Slavabogu Nigeria Limited, Mr. Zekeriya Oktem said the facility when completed will also include a Museum of the football hall of fame.

He also disclosed the facility can be used to generate more funds for the State government through its hospitality section where meetings, seminars and conferences can hold in addition to various advertising platforms that will be available at the facility on completion.
