IFAKO-IJAYE GH MARKS WORLD DIABETES DAY

As part of activities marking the 2018 World Diabetes Day (WDD), the Lagos State General Hospital in Ifako-Ijaiye has organised free blood sugar level screening and counselling to raise awareness on the disease as well as support people living with the ailment.   

Speaking at the event, the Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Olusola Amure said that “though diabetes has no permanent cure, it can be effectively be controlled through early diagnosis, treatment, healthy balanced diet and good living environment among those living with the disease”.

He also disclosed that the State Government will soon launch its health scheme to provide qualitative and affordable health care for all residents, and urged all Lagosians to register with any Lagos State Public Hospital or accredited private hospital in order to benefit from the scheme.

Also speaking, the Director of Service Charter in the Hospital, Dr. Oluwatoyin Aiyelotan noted that some of the symptoms of diabetes include excessive urination especially at night, wound that fails to heal quickly and increase in eating but with a noticeable weight loss among others.

She, therefore, advised diabetic patients not to share their medications with anyone and also visit the hospital regularly for effective management of their condition.

The theme of this year’s Diabetes Day, “The Family and Diabetes” is aimed at creating awareness on the impact of the disease on the family as well as to promote the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of diabetes.
