LAGOS COMMITTED TO ENFORCEMENT OF TRAFFIC LAWS

The Lagos State Government is to establish a Rapid Intervention Squad to combat traffic gridlock as part of the renewed traffic management policy of this administration.

The Commissioner, Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Ladi Lawanson disclosed at a press conference held in Alausa on Wednesday that the Squad would operate with the aid of motorbikes in order to enhance their movement to any hot spots across the State.

He added that the squad will be tasked with the responsibility of initiating means of resolving naughty traffic situations as well as using technology to give accurate situation reports to vehicles owners.

According to him, “The peculiarity of Lagos traffic with over two million vehicles plying the roads and only 4,000 Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials at its disposal, it is of high priority to the Government to take fresh measures to bring about a lasting solution to the traffic situation in the State. This new initiative would be test-run by the State government through the Agency during this yuletide season”.

While appealing to the motoring public that LASTMA was created and empowered by the law to control and manage vehicular traffic flow in the State, Lawanson said the Agency will enforce State and National Laws that govern the safe use of vehicles on the road, deter and apprehend road traffic offenders, enforce the use of bus stops and bus terminals, and maintain a register of traffic violators.

He further added that the Agency shall also safeguard highways from encroachment through roadside trading, street hawking and alms begging, appealing to the general public to join hands with the State government to keep Lagos traffic moving by obeying all traffic enforcement agencies’ directives and traffic laws across the State.
