LAGOS TO RECONSTRUCT REMI OYEFIADE STREET IN ETI-OSA LG, HOLDS STAKEHOLDERS MEETING

The Lagos State Government, on Thursday, held a stakeholders meeting on the reconstruction and upgrade of Remi Oyefiade Street in Marshy Hill Estate, Eti-Osa Local Government to initiate modalities to mitigate the effect of perennial flooding in the area and alleviate the sufferings of the residents in the community.

Speaking at a meeting with residents of the affected property on Remi Oyefiade Street at the Ministry’s conference room, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Rotimi Ogunleye said the State Government places a high premium on participation of the citizenry in any developmental projects hence the need for the stakeholders meeting.

“We plan with the people; we don’t plan for the people. I am sure you will agree with me that the State Government has managed to connect with the people of the State,” the Commissioner said.

The Commissioner, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Boladele Dapo-Thomas said the meeting was convened to ensure that stakeholders are adequately briefed about government intentions before the commencement of the project.

He buttressed his position saying, “The primary function of Government is to make the lives of its citizenry better through the provision of basic infrastructure and ensure a sustainable environment. Whilst Government funds this project, ownership belongs to the people, as such this project becomes our project. Therefore it should be secured, well guided and well monitored so that the facility serves long”.

Ogunleye, therefore, urged residents to cooperate with the State Government and particularly the contractor in actualising government’s road infrastructural improvement policy.

He said the project amongst other things will improve the aesthetic value of the area, reduce travel time, improve the connectivity index, improve rental and capital value, reduce psychological stress and improve the level of socio-cultural interaction and evolution.

The Commissioner enjoined residents to bear with any form of inconvenience that may be experienced during the construction period, assuring that the project will be completed within the stipulated time.

Speaking on behalf of other residents, Prince Mathew Ahiamba, who represented the Chairman of the association said the initiative is a welcome development because it would enhance the value of their property and improve the standard of living in the area.

Also, Mr. Adegoke Clement, Chairman, Marshy Hill Estate expressed gratitude to both the State Government and the Ministry for considering the upgrade of Remi Oyefiade, saying that Government will get the best of the cooperation of the residents.
