LAGOS HEALTH COMMISSION URGES CONSULTANTS TO MENTOR YOUNG DOCTORS

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos Health Service Commission, Dr. Benjamin Ademuyiwa Eniayewun, has admonished that mentorship should be used as a vital support system to aid medical progress amongst vibrant doctors in order to stem the tide of emigration by young medical officers.

The advice was given at a meeting with the Health Management Committee of Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, during Dr. Eniayewun’s familiarisation visit to the facility.

According to him, “Transparent leadership amongst Consultant doctors, is pertinent to mentoring subordinate doctors for enhanced medical progression. This actually is a tool which can help in retaining good medical hands as well as save lives of many patients in dire need of medical attention”.

While intimating on plans to turn Alimosho General Hospital into a contemporary teaching facility in Lagos State, Dr. Eniayewun espoused that every system must institutionalise training with the use of continuous medical education.

He hinted that plans are underway towards providing adequate healthcare services to address high patient  influx prevalent in Alimosho General Hospital, adding that more House Officers, as well as Resident Doctors, would soon be deployed to some departments of the hospital.

In his remarks, the Medical Director, Alimosho General Hospital, Dr.  Madewa Adewole Adebajo applauded Dr. Eniayewun’s relentless efforts at initiating a standard through the visit and expressed his support for initiating a mentoring policy towards improving medical practice across the State.

He, however, lamented the recruitment of medical officers from overseas despite vacancies across the State, expressing concern that the development could leave the country with a dearth of good clinicians.
